The World Trade Organization (WTO) urged member states to reform global trade rules to avoid fragmentation that could significantly reduce global GDP, especially affecting poorer countries. In its annual report, the WTO highlighted that current rules struggle to adapt to economic power shifts, industrial policies, digital trade, and rising political tensions. Economists simulated scenarios showing that a fragmented world could lead to a 5.1% drop in global GDP by 2050, while stronger multilateral cooperation could increase GDP by 2.9%. The WTO's chief economist emphasized the critical challenges facing the trade system, including economic power distribution and state intervention. The report warns that without a solid WTO framework, regional trade agreements could undermine global trade efficiency.
