On September 14, 1895, the Cernavodă Bridge was inaugurated, becoming the largest bridge complex in Europe at that time. Designed by engineer Anghel Saligny, the bridge connected Bucharest and Constanța. Gustave Eiffel's firm initially proposed the superstructure, but the Romanian government later assigned the project to the Romanian Railway Authority. The bridge features a central span of 190 meters and a total length of 4087.95 meters, making it the third longest bridge complex in the world. A bronze monument commemorating the heroes of the War of Independence was also erected at the Cernavodă end. Saligny personally ensured the bridge's safety during its inauguration by testing it with heavy locomotives.
