The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won local elections in Lower Saxony, but the significant rise of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was notable. AfD tripled its score from 2021, achieving its best local election result in the region. Preliminary results show CDU leading with 27.2% of votes, followed by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) at 24.6%. AfD secured 15.9%, surpassing the Greens at 14.1%. Voter turnout increased to 64.6%, with over 6.3 million eligible voters. The results are closely monitored at the federal level, especially after AfD's strong performance in Saxony-Anhalt.
