The electronic identity card (CEI) and the simple identity card (CIS) share the same format but have significant differences. CEI includes a chip that stores data and enables digital identification, authentication, and electronic signatures. It can also serve as a travel document within the EU and Schengen Area. In contrast, CIS is used solely for identity verification within Romania and lacks electronic data. CEI features biometric data, including fingerprints, which are securely stored and accessible only to authorized government entities. Changes to personal information on CEI can be updated electronically, while CIS requires a new card for such updates. CEI is available for children aged 0-14, whereas CIS is not. The costs differ, with CEI priced at 70 lei and CIS at 40 lei, although CEI may be issued for free under specific conditions during the PNRR implementation period.
