In 1895, Romania inaugurated the longest bridge in Europe, the Carol I Bridge, designed by engineer Anghel Saligny. In 1928, the Heroes' Cross was unveiled on Caraiman Mountain, honoring soldiers from World War I. The American national anthem was inspired by Francis Scott Key during a British bombardment in 1814.
