Romania faces a challenging winter due to inadequate gas storage capacity, primarily controlled by Romgaz. The country has only six gas storage facilities, with a total active capacity of about 3.17 billion cubic meters, insufficient for a harsh winter without heavy imports. The concentration of storage in two main facilities poses a significant risk, as any technical issues could lead to national vulnerabilities. Current projects to increase storage capacity are delayed and do not address immediate structural weaknesses. Experts warn that the real challenge lies in extraction capacity, which is limited and may not meet peak demand during cold spells. Without improvements in both storage and extraction capabilities, Romania remains vulnerable to energy crises during winter months.
