The European Investment Bank (EIB) announced its first investment in small modular reactors (SMRs), aiming to support the development of next-generation nuclear technologies in Europe. SMRs, which are smaller than conventional reactors, can be factory-built and transported, offering a flexible energy production solution. The EIB will provide a €40 million loan to Finnish startup Steady Energy for a 50-megawatt SMR designed for local heating networks. This investment is part of a broader strategy to promote SMR technology, with the first European reactors expected to be operational by the early 2030s. The EIB's support signals positive investor sentiment amid differing EU member state views on nuclear energy.
