The percentage of Romanians who cannot afford a personal car has significantly decreased from 15.6% in 2024 to 8.1% in 2025, according to Eurostat data. This represents a reduction of 7.5 percentage points, nearly 48% compared to the previous year. Romania has experienced one of the largest declines in recent years, with the figure dropping from 35.5% in 2015 to 8.1% in 2025. Despite this improvement, Romania still exceeds the EU average of 5.5% in 2025. The data indicates that the indicator measures financial inability to afford a car, not simply the absence of one. The European Commission uses this metric in transport poverty analysis, highlighting the importance of financial accessibility in car ownership.
