For the first time, the number of centenarians in Japan has surpassed 100,000, reaching 107,677 as of September 1, according to the Ministry of Health. This milestone coincides with Japan's declining birth rate, which hit a historic low last year. The median age in Japan is 49.9 years, making it the second oldest population globally. Approximately 90% of centenarians are women, and this marks the 56th consecutive year of record growth in this age group. The demographic crisis poses challenges such as labor shortages and increased social welfare costs.
