On the trail of drug cartels: the EP delegation investigated in Colombia

A visit by nine members of the European Parliament's LIBE committee to Colombia aimed to address the growing issue of drug trafficking and its impact on European security. The delegation met with Colombian officials and law enforcement to learn about anti-drug strategies and practices. They emphasized the importance of respecting human rights in law enforcement efforts. Despite a decrease in cocaine seizures in 2024, the overall drug trade remains a significant concern, with traffickers adapting their methods to evade detection. The European Commission has adopted a port strategy to enhance security and improve customs coordination. A new drug strategy is set to be introduced in December 2025, focusing on disrupting organized crime networks and improving international cooperation. The delegation's findings will inform future EU legislative proposals.
