150 new doctors in the SNS: APAH applauds but warns
The Portuguese Association of Hospital Administrators welcomed the government's exceptional measure allowing the hiring of up to 150 doctors this year, emphasizing the need to attract professionals. The government authorized permanent contracts for urgent staffing needs in health units and oncology institutes until December 31, 2026. APAH's president, Xavier Barreto, highlighted the importance of this autonomy for hospitals to reduce reliance on overtime and service providers. However, he stressed that success depends on the ability to attract these professionals to the National Health Service (SNS). The hiring process will require justification and assessment of financial impacts and service needs.
