189 journalists murdered in the last 2 years: in 86 percent of cases, no one has been convicted
A recent UNESCO report reveals that 189 journalists were killed globally in the past two years, marking the deadliest period for journalists in a decade. Since 2006, a total of 1,641 journalists have been murdered, averaging one every four days. The majority of these killings occurred in Arab countries and Latin America, with 86% of cases resulting in no convictions. The report highlights inadequate investigations and prosecutions, especially in conflict zones, where 127 journalists were killed. Notably, the use of drones in attacks has increased, accounting for 26% of fatalities in 2024 and 2025. Palestine had the highest number of journalist murders, followed by Mexico and Ukraine. The report emphasizes a significant shift in the global risk landscape for journalists.
