1980. A junior European judo player who deserved criticism
In 1980, Lisbon hosted around 100 judokas from 20 countries for the Junior European Championships, but the event faced criticism from the European Judo Union regarding the inadequate facilities at the Pavilhão dos Desportos. At that time, judo was still developing in Portugal, with efforts to invite Japanese teams for tournaments. This groundwork eventually led to success, as Portugal now boasts four Olympic bronze medals in judo, won by Nuno Delgado, Telma Monteiro, Jorge Fonseca, and Patrícia Sampaio.
