25 thousand public employees may lose their jobs due to AI in the Netherlands
The Dutch government plans to eliminate 25,000 civil service jobs due to an AI efficiency program, aiming to save €900 million annually by 2027 and €3.5 billion by 2035. The proposal will be presented early next year, with officials emphasizing the need for simplification and efficiency in governance. Despite a 41% increase in civil servants since 2018, the government seeks to reduce organizational costs and streamline operations. The current budget deficit of 1.8% is among the lowest in the EU, yet concerns remain about fiscal sustainability in the Netherlands.
