A $25 billion fine was imposed on Meta due to the Cambridge Analytica case

A New Mexico court has ordered Meta, Facebook's parent company, to pay a $25 billion fine for mishandling user data related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The court found that Meta misled users about data collection practices involving Cambridge Analytica, which gathered data without user consent for political campaign purposes, notably during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. This incident affected over 270,000 users, with estimates suggesting that nearly 50 million users' data may have been compromised. Following the 2018 scandal, Meta faced lawsuits in multiple countries and previously incurred significant fines from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.
