The European champion athlete died of cancer at the age of 34
Ciara Mageean, the Irish middle-distance runner and European champion, passed away at 34 due to cancer. She lost her battle with the disease early in the morning, surrounded by loved ones. Mageean had publicly announced her colon cancer diagnosis last year, revealing in June that it had progressed to stage four. She married her partner, Thomas Morrell, in a private ceremony on October 12. Born in Portaferry, Northern Ireland, in 1992, she won the women's 1500 meters at the 2024 European Championships and earned medals at previous championships and the Commonwealth Games. Mageean also competed in the 2016 and 2021 Olympics but missed the 2024 Paris Games due to an Achilles injury.
