A new development can capture 370 thousand tons of carbon dioxide annually
Veolia's carbon capture system will be integrated into a waste-to-energy plant in the UK, capable of capturing 370,000 tons of CO2 annually. This project, named Protos, will process up to 500,000 tons of non-recyclable waste each year and is expected to start operations by mid-2029. The captured CO2 will be transported by HyNet North West and stored in depleted gas fields under the Liverpool Bay. While this technology offers a way to reduce emissions from waste management, it cannot replace efforts to minimize waste generation or enhance recycling.
