50 thousand heat deaths in Europe's deadliest summer

This summer has seen the highest recorded heat-related deaths in Europe, with climate change responsible for two-thirds of the 50,000 excess deaths. Studies indicate that this year's toll significantly surpasses previous peaks in 2003 and 2022. Researchers from Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine analyzed urban areas across 30 countries, estimating that nearly 6,000 deaths involved individuals under 65. The southern and western regions of Europe experienced the highest temperatures, with Italy, France, and Spain reporting the most fatalities. Portugal recorded 476 heat-related deaths this summer.
