6,120 children and young people in care in 2025
The number of institutionalized children and youth decreased by approximately 4% from 2024 to 2025, totaling 6,120 in care. This decline is attributed to a reduction in residential placements and an increase in family-based care. Neglect remains the primary reason for placement, accounting for 66.9% of cases. The demographic profile of those in care shows a balanced gender distribution, with a predominance of adolescents aged 12 to 17. In 2025, 1,801 children exited the system, with 67.4% returning to their families. The average duration of stay in care is around three years, and most protective measures are applied in natural living environments, affecting 88% of cases.
