65 Years of the German-Turkish Recruitment Agreement – The Old Age Poverty of Guest Workers
Sixty-five years after the recruitment agreement between Germany and Turkey, many former guest workers face poverty. Despite their contributions to Germany's prosperity, discrimination persists. Studies show that elderly migrants, particularly those of Turkish descent, experience significantly higher rates of poverty in old age compared to native Germans. The average pension for Turkish nationals is about 360 euros less than that of Germans, with many relying on social security. Factors contributing to this situation include lower wages, interrupted work histories, and limited opportunities for further education. The challenges faced by these workers highlight systemic inequalities in the labor market and social security system.
