650 people denied at the border during nearly two years of border controls

In December 2024, former asylum minister Marjolein Faber implemented border checks to reduce asylum applications and ease pressure on the asylum system. By September, nearly 44,000 vehicles and trains were checked, with over 580,000 individuals screened. 650 people were denied entry due to insufficient documentation or security concerns. Critics, including local communities and experts, questioned the effectiveness of these checks, arguing they did not significantly lower asylum requests. The Dutch government ended these temporary checks earlier this month, opting for expanded routine checks instead.
