83% against 36% at the doctor is not the same: Microsoft's new AI system identifies diseases twice as accurately

Microsoft's AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO) has demonstrated superior diagnostic accuracy compared to general practitioners in complex medical cases. In tests, it achieved around 83% accuracy, significantly outperforming doctors who scored about 36% with reference materials. The system also excelled in emergency scenarios, achieving 80% accuracy versus 47% for doctors. MAI-DxO operates sequentially, asking targeted questions based on patient complaints, mimicking real physician practices. Microsoft plans to test the system in real clinical settings, collaborating with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Mayo Clinic. Experts emphasize that AI should assist rather than replace human doctors, addressing potential legal accountability issues.
