The legendary computer has become 9375 times faster: rebuilt in a year and a half, the 1976 Cray-1

A creative team in Spain has built a 1:1 replica of the Cray-1 supercomputer, powered by thirty 2012 Mac Minis. This installation is displayed at the Museo de Historia de la Computación in Majadas de Tiétar. The original Cray-1 was the first commercially successful supercomputer, used for processing large datasets in various scientific fields. The replica achieves a computational capacity of 1.5 teraflops, significantly surpassing the original's 160 megaflops. The team faced engineering challenges, including cooling solutions and noise reduction. They opted for macOS Mojave to allow task sharing among nodes, and visitors can see the replica in action. Plans are underway to expand the cluster with additional Mac Minis through crowdfunding.
