The Sand Ridge cannot be saved by planting trees all over it.
A recent Hungarian study suggests that the preservation of the drying Homokhátság region cannot be achieved solely through extensive afforestation. Instead, a natural mosaic of forests, shrubs, and grasslands is proposed as a solution. Research indicates that the presence of woody plants can enhance the resilience of grass species against drought. However, the quantity of trees is crucial, as excessive tree planting can lead to ecological issues, such as reduced soil moisture at deeper levels. The natural vegetation of Kiskunság consists of a delicate mosaic of forests and grasslands, and the promotion of diverse, mixed landscapes is encouraged over monoculture plantations. Active support for the establishment of small forest patches is recommended in areas where grazing has diminished woody plants, while existing natural habitats should be preserved.
