The International Criminal Court received the Sakharov Prize for the protection of human rights

The International Criminal Court (ICC) and its officials have been awarded the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament. This recognition highlights the ICC's crucial role in upholding international law and justice. The announcement was made by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, emphasizing the importance of multilateral relations. The award aims to draw attention to the ICC's work amidst ongoing attacks, particularly from the U.S., which has imposed sanctions on ICC officials. The European Parliament has expressed concerns over these attacks and called for protective measures for ICC staff. Hungary's parliament recently voted to remain a member of the ICC, despite previous intentions to withdraw.
