"The loneliness of the elderly is a serious public health problem." More than 2.5 million Portuguese are now over 65 years old.
Portugal faces a growing issue of loneliness among the elderly, with over 2.5 million citizens aged 65 and older. The Alegria de Viver Foundation actively combats unwanted isolation through various activities in Lisbon and Oeiras. On World Senior Citizens Day, the focus is on understanding the feelings of seniors, particularly after retirement, which can severely impact their mental health. Since 2022, the foundation has organized around 900 social events, currently supporting over 165 elderly individuals aged between 61 and 100. The initiative aims to enhance the quality of life and emotional well-being of older adults by fostering intergenerational connections and daily motivation.
