The number of single pensioners is growing faster among men than among women
The number of single elderly men receiving AOW has increased by 3.9% in one year, while the number of women grew by only 1.7%. There are still twice as many women as men receiving this pension. The growth is linked to changing life expectancies, with women often outliving their partners. Older men tend to seek new partners after losing a spouse, whereas older women are less inclined to do so. The SVB highlights that the higher pension for singles may discourage cohabitation.
