Number of first asylum applications decreases in the third quarter

In the third quarter of 2026, first asylum applications in the Netherlands decreased by 13% compared to the previous year, totaling nearly 5,900. This decline is attributed mainly to fewer applications from Eritreans and Syrians. Despite this drop, the total number of asylum requests in the first nine months of 2026 remains 8% higher than in 2025. The European asylum and migration pact, effective since June 12, aims to reduce illegal migration and streamline asylum processes, now requiring decisions within six months. However, concerns have been raised about the potential impact on the quality of care for vulnerable asylum seekers. Additionally, the number of family reunifications has also decreased significantly, with 3,200 family members arriving in the third quarter, down from 4,700 in 2025. New regulations distinguish between A-status and B-status refugees, affecting family reunification rights.
