Camping for housing. "I withdraw the relentless word with all ease," says Pedro Duarte

Pedro Duarte, the Mayor of Porto, expressed willingness to retract his previous statement about being "implacable" regarding the law enforcement against tent protests for housing rights. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the law without exceptions, regardless of the cause's merit. Duarte acknowledged past protests that received police tolerance but distinguished them from current tent occupations. He highlighted the need for lawful demonstrations and praised the Communist Party's organized protest as a model of proper engagement with authorities. Following police interventions at protests in Porto and Lisbon, which resulted in injuries and arrests, the Inspectorate-General of Internal Administration has initiated an investigation into the police actions. Protesters are demanding changes to housing laws and increased public housing availability.
