Eight war bunkers converted into winter hotels for bats in Sint-Katelijne-Waver and Bonheiden
Eight historical war bunkers in Sint-Katelijne-Waver and Bonheiden have been adapted for bats to hibernate. Modifications include special doors and sealed openings to ensure a stable environment. The bunkers, part of the KW-line defense system, provide ideal conditions due to their thick walls. Small interventions, such as adding water barrels, help maintain humidity levels. The project aims to support bat species like the large-eared bat and water bat while also restoring flight paths by improving surrounding habitats. Funding came from the Agency for Nature and Forest, the province of Antwerp, and the local municipality.
