Resigned President Vucic Acknowledges Defeat: Student Movement Wins Elections in Serbia
The Student List in Serbia has reportedly won the most votes in the parliamentary elections, according to former president Vucic based on an exit poll. This election is marked by a significant student protest movement challenging the autocratic leader Aleksandar Vucic and his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Voter turnout reached a record 67.6%, the highest since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992. Long lines were reported at polling stations, with Vucic himself waiting nearly two hours to vote. There are concerns about violent incidents at some polling places, prompting calls for calm from the European ambassador to Serbia. The Student List emerged from two years of protests against Vucic, sparked by a tragic incident at a train station in Novi Sad that resulted in sixteen deaths, attributed to poor construction linked to SNS-affiliated companies.
