AI may predict cancer patient survival chances based on a photo
Researchers from Mass General Brigham and Maastricht University developed an AI model trained on over 40 million images to estimate patients' biological age and survival chances. The model found that patients appearing older than their actual age had a higher mortality risk. For instance, 21% of those estimated to be twenty years older died within ninety days, compared to 6% for those estimated to be less than ten years older. While promising, further validation is needed before clinical application. AI is also used in healthcare for administrative tasks and analyzing medical images, with outcomes verified by healthcare professionals.
