We estimated the apocalypse glacier
A new study indicates that the Thwaites Glacier could significantly raise global sea levels this century, potentially doubling previous estimates. This glacier, located in West Antarctica, is crucial as its collapse could lead to a 65 cm rise in sea levels and trigger further ice melt, possibly increasing levels by up to 3 meters. Experts agree on the glacier's impending collapse but struggle to predict the timeline and extent of melting due to complex processes. The glacier's ice mass is partially on land and partially floating, with new models showing transitional zones that allow warmer seawater to penetrate and destabilize the glacier. Current models suggest that the glacier's retreat is likely irreversible, with complete loss projected by the 23rd century unless carbon emissions are reduced.
