Almost 283,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine identified by media investigation

Mediazona and BBC Russian service report that 282,993 Russian soldiers have been identified as killed in Ukraine. The latest update includes 6,880 names added since early October 2026. The figures are based on publicly available data, suggesting actual deaths may be higher. As of October 23, 2026, 7,920 officers' deaths have been verified, with their share of casualties decreasing over time. Estimates indicate Russian military losses are significantly higher than Ukrainian ones, with CSIS estimating around 1.4 million Russian casualties compared to 525,000–625,000 for Ukraine.
