Alternative penalties and GAS fines from 14 years in Zottegem, Herzele and Sint-Lievens-Houtem

In Zottegem, Herzele, and Sint-Lievens-Houtem, youths aged 14 and older can now receive a GAS fine. The local regulations have been updated to reflect this change, although the city emphasizes the importance of alternative penalties for minors. Mayor Evelien De Both (N-VA) highlighted mediation as a valuable alternative. The adjustments come in response to changes in federal regulations, allowing fines of 175 euros for minors and up to 500 euros for adults, targeting issues like littering and noise disturbances. The city plans to launch a communication campaign to inform residents about the new rules, utilizing social media to reach younger audiences. Alternative penalties, such as community service, will remain an option for minors caught committing offenses.
