When Russia colonized California

North America has a complex history of colonization, including Russian involvement in Alaska and California. The Russian-American Company was established in 1799 to manage Alaska, leading to trade negotiations with Spanish California. Nikolai Rezanov's efforts resulted in the founding of Fort Ross in 1812, a multicultural settlement that became a hub for various industries. Despite initial hopes, the colony struggled to sustain itself and was eventually sold to John Sutter in 1841. The Russian presence in North America ended with the sale of Alaska to the USA in 1867, but their legacy remains, particularly at Fort Ross.
