Fuel has become so expensive that it interrupted the journey of a luxury cruise ship that lasted three and a half years.
Passengers aboard the luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Residences Odyssey are stranded in Cambodia due to high fuel costs. The ship, which set sail from Belfast in October 2024, was intended to visit nearly 150 countries by spring 2028. Approximately 200 passengers are affected, and the operating company is working on temporary housing solutions. Fuel costs surged from $1,800 to $8,000 per cabin monthly due to the Iranian war, prompting the company to seek ways to reduce consumption. However, these measures were insufficient to offset the rising costs, and the operator is now focusing on stabilizing its financial situation over the next 60 days, with uncertain outcomes. The ship features various amenities, including restaurants, bars, and recreational facilities, with cabin rentals ranging from $120,000 to $440,000 for the entire journey.
