Antwerp police arrest 336 known troublemakers since tightened approach around "claimers"

Since the beginning of the month, Antwerp police have arrested 336 known troublemakers due to a controversial measure implemented by the city government. This approach allows officers to detain individuals for up to 12 hours without them committing an offense at that moment. The measure has faced strong criticism from opposition parties and human rights organizations, with protests occurring. Mayor Els van Doesburg defended the initiative, citing positive feedback from residents. However, opposition party PVDA argues that the arrests are illegal and ineffective, merely pushing problems elsewhere. Other parties, including Groen and CD&V, also criticized the temporary detentions, while Vlaams Belang supported the measure.
