Arau wants Brussels to classify shelters under the South Palace to save them from demolition
The Arau city association has requested the Brussels Region to classify the recently discovered World War II shelters under the South Palace to prevent their demolition. Arau emphasizes the historical and commemorative significance of the site and aims to ensure an objective review of the South Palace project without interference from the MIVB. Despite opposition to the metro project, the Brussels government plans to proceed with the tunnel construction. Arau submitted a historical analysis demonstrating the existence of the shelters, but has faced challenges in obtaining official recognition and access to plans. Brussels Secretary of State for Urban Planning, Audrey Henry, acknowledged the shelters' existence and stated that further research will assess their heritage value. The situation highlights concerns about the handling of the South Palace demolition project and the broader Metro 3 initiative.
