ASEAN urges Myanmar to comply with peace plan and assures that Aung San Suu Kyi "is well"

ASEAN's special envoy for Myanmar, Theresa Lazaro, urged the military junta to adhere to the peace plan and confirmed that Aung San Suu Kyi is "well." Lazaro's visit included discussions on humanitarian issues and proposals to advance a five-point consensus for peace. Despite her efforts, she has been unable to meet with Suu Kyi, who has been detained since the 2021 coup. The UN has reported severe human rights violations in Myanmar, with military forces accused of killing thousands of civilians. Lazaro's visit comes as the military government seeks to break its international isolation, following elections deemed illegitimate by the UN and many countries.
