In Brazil, indigenous peoples denounce a wave of violence in retaliation for Lula's reelection
On November 1, thousands of students protested in Brazil against violence towards indigenous peoples, following the re-election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The APIB reported 40 incidents involving indigenous communities from July to October, averaging one every three days. Concerns grew after the first round of elections due to arson and threats of land invasions, attributed to cattle ranchers who feared losing control of indigenous territories. Indigenous peoples hoped Lula's unexpected re-election would lead to a reduction in violence.
