End for Kremlin-critical newspaper "Novaya Gazeta"
The Russian newspaper "Novaya Gazeta," known for its critical stance, announced its closure after over 30 years of operation. Editor Sergei Sokolov stated that the authorities forced the editorial team to cease operations. The newspaper, founded by Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov, faced increasing pressure, especially after the onset of the war in Ukraine. Despite halting domestic production due to censorship, it continued to publish online. The closure follows a series of government actions against its staff, including the recent interrogation of Sokolov and the arrest of journalist Oleg Roldugin. Muratov had previously been labeled a "foreign agent," which carries significant restrictions.
