Australian murderer loses case to eat Vegemite in prison
Andre McKechnie, serving a life sentence for murder, claims he cannot enjoy Australian culture without Vegemite. He argues that prisons must provide food that contributes to his well-being, including Vegemite. However, Vegemite has been banned in Victoria prisons since 2006 due to its potential use for smuggling drugs and brewing illegal alcohol. A judge recently rejected McKechnie's request, stating that his cultural rights are limited due to his incarceration. McKechnie was sentenced for stabbing a developer in Queensland in the 1990s and has since been transferred to Victoria.
