Road transport: tons of fruits and vegetables wasted and a boom in imports

The blockade of road transport in Southern Italy has led to significant losses of fresh agricultural products, with many being discarded. In response, wholesale markets have increased imports from Spain, Albania, Turkey, and Greece to fill supply gaps. Italmercati reports a notable decline in arrivals from Southern Italy, particularly from Sicily and Calabria, while prices for certain products remain high but manageable. The situation has also affected supermarkets in Rome, where supply issues are becoming critical due to rising operational costs and delivery uncertainties. Prices for key products like tomatoes have surged, with wholesale prices reaching up to 7.50 euros per kilogram.
