With the closure of "Novaïa Gazeta", press freedom in Russia is experiencing its swan song
Novaïa Gazeta, a prominent independent newspaper in Moscow, announces its closure due to ongoing repression from Russian authorities. The editorial team, led by Sergueï Sokolov, states that they can no longer operate under constant threat and lack of resources. The newspaper, which had previously adapted to restrictions by publishing online and in limited print, will cease all activities on November 9. Founded by Dmitri Mouratov, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Novaïa Gazeta had been a critical voice in Russia, especially against the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, exiled journalists have established Novaïa Gazeta Europe to continue their reporting.
