The World of Disappearing Hungarian Pubs – Zsófia Sivák Won the 2026 Capa Grand Prize
In Hungary, many rural pubs have closed or transformed, losing their original functions. Photographer Zsófia Sivák explores still-operating pubs in disadvantaged areas of Eastern Hungary through her series "Hitel nincs." Growing up in Kerecsend, she reflects on the dual nature of these spaces, which hold both fond childhood memories and darker experiences related to addiction. Her project highlights the decline of community life as pubs close, emphasizing their role as social hubs and refuges from loneliness. Sivák plans to publish her work in book form, presenting images in an associative narrative rather than a geographical order. The Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center recently revived its award, supporting promising photographers with financial and international exhibition opportunities.
