According to the European Commission's new proposal, the EU border protection agency could also monitor social media.
The European Commission proposed strengthening Frontex's role in border management, allowing it to monitor social media for migration-related content. This aims to enhance support for member states in protecting EU borders and managing the return of unauthorized migrants. Frontex could operate outside the EU for return operations and establish a center to track publicly available social media content. The proposal also includes a request for Frontex to obtain a trusted notifier status under the Digital Services Act, enabling expedited review of flagged illegal content. Additionally, new regulations aim to digitize return procedures to streamline processes and improve cooperation among member states.
