By the end of the century, Lake Balaton could be divided into three parts
A climate model predicts that by the end of the century, Lake Balaton could split into three larger water bodies deeper than one meter due to adverse conditions. This scenario, presented by engineer Bence Fülöp at a conference, highlights the interconnectedness of hydrological, ecological, social, and economic factors influenced by climate change. Without water replenishment, the lake's water balance may deteriorate significantly, leading to a situation where only three larger sections remain. Fülöp emphasized that ongoing developments around the lake exacerbate these negative trends. Recent data showed a notable drop in water levels, with a decrease of 34 centimeters recorded between mid-June and late August.
