The Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office has detained former central bank governor György Matolcsy in connection with an ongoing investigation into significant economic fraud. Matolcsy and his associates were questioned as suspects regarding the misuse of public funds linked to the establishment of the Pallas Athéné Foundations in 2014. The investigation revealed that these foundations received over 266 billion HUF from the central bank's profits, with the management handled by Optima Investment Ltd. Allegations include a sham securities loan agreement aimed at transferring control of the PADME Foundation's assets to individuals close to Matolcsy, allowing them to benefit financially. Matolcsy and others involved have denied making statements during the questioning. Further details are withheld to ensure the investigation's integrity.
