Chinese batteries: 80 billion for the world

Chinese battery manufacturers have announced nearly $90 billion in foreign investments since 2023 to navigate protectionist barriers and strengthen global supply chains. Companies like CATL, BYD, and Gotion are expanding production outside China due to increasing trade protection measures in Western markets. Investments include $12 billion in 14 foreign projects this year alone. Europe is a key destination, with $31.5 billion in investments, following Southeast Asia. CATL is seeking new factory locations in Europe, while the EU aims for a fully localized battery supply chain by the decade's end. However, challenges remain, including technological expertise and competitive pricing. Chinese firms dominate over 80% of global battery component production, and their international expansion may solidify their market position.
